Who qualifies for Health Express?

Health Express is available to anyone who cannot afford or finds difficulty with finding transportation to his or her medically related appointments.  We will determine, based on a couple of questions, if your need is Health Express appropriate.  If not, we will happily find you another method of transportation.

How does someone “qualify” for Health Express?

  • The first thing we do is ask you where you need to go.
  • Then, we determine if there is available affordable public transportation and ask if you have considered this.
  • If you have, and nothing works for you, Health Express will take you there.
  • If you haven’t we will kindly ask you to call some of the existing services that are available (and we will even give you their numbers!).

Where can I go with Health Express?

Health Express is a service only for those who are traveling to or from a medically related appointment.  This could mean a hospital, a specialty medical appointment such as the dentist, or medical lab.  If you have a medical emergency, please call 911.

What is a medically-related appointment?

Medically-related appointments are services offered by trained and licensed medical and allied health professionals.

Can I go to a non-medically related appointment with Health Express?

No.  Health Express is for the sole purpose of traveling to and from medically related appointments only.  This is not a personal transportation service.  We also do not pick up prescriptions.

I have a disability.  Can I still use Health Express?

Of course!  Health Express vans are equipped with wheelchair access.  Our friendly and knowledgeable drivers are very experienced in loading passengers who may be in wheelchairs or have other disabilities.  Please remember to tell the operator of any disabilities you may have when you are making your reservation.

How much does a ride cost?

Health Express is free to use if you cannot afford any other type of available transportation.  Health Express always accepts donations upon pick up or drop off, or by mail made out to Seniors First/Health Express, 11566 D. Ave., Auburn, CA 95603.  Suggested donations are 5$ per ride and above.

How can I reserve my ride?

Simply call 1-800-655-RIDE (7433) between 7:00am and 3:30pm.  The operator will be able to help you with scheduling your ride.

When must I reserve my ride?

Rides may be scheduled anywhere from two weeks to up to 1:00pm on the day prior to your medical appointment. Be sure to reserve your ride as early as possible, because we cannot always guarantee scheduling a ride the day before your appointment. You may schedule a ride between 7:00am and 3:30pm by calling 1-800-655-RIDE (7433).  The first pick up starts at 8:30am and the last pick up is at 4:30pm.

How do I cancel a ride?

If you need to cancel your ride, please call 530-887-7433 at least 24 hrs before your scheduled pick-up time.

Do you provide transportation for Medi-Cal individuals?

If you qualify for Medi-Cal for your transportation needs, there are Medi-Cal transportation providers out there who can take you to your appointments and we can suggest some for you.  If your transportation needs do not qualify for Medi-Cal reimbursement and you have no alternative transportation, we will gladly help you out.

How are you different from Dial-A-Ride?

We offer door-to-door service for medically related appointments across Western Placer County.  Dial-A-Ride is a broader, curb-to-curb transportation service (not only for medical appointments) and is an extension of the bus service.  Additionally, it is generally confined to certain geographical boundaries.  Often, our services overlap and in those cases, we’ll refer you to Dial-A-Ride.

How can I make a donation?

Health Express is a free service and is a project of Seniors First, a non-profit.  Seniors First always accepts donations for Health Express via check made out to Seniors First/Health Express, and sent to 11566 D Ave., Auburn, CA 95603.
